What to watch for

  • Sideways overlapping magnets on a disc give two weak poles protruding from the edge
  • North-south alternating layout was a total failure but the 369 and 9-8 groupings show promise
  • Levitation on a central pole reduces friction so a little magnet pull keeps it spinning for a long time
  • Three donut magnets on the base circle gave noticeably stronger spin in one direction
  • Getting the ninth magnet positioned right for levitation is key to the whole rig working

In the workshop I spin up a saw blade windmill loaded with sideways overlapping permanent magnets on a levitating pole. I explain permanent magnet pole behavior, test different groupings, and share why the 9-8 layout might finally give stable push-pull motion.

Key takeaways

  • Sideways overlapping magnets on a disc give two weak poles protruding from the edge
  • North-south alternating layout was a total failure but the 369 and 9-8 groupings show promise
  • Levitation on a central pole reduces friction so a little magnet pull keeps it spinning for a long time
  • Three donut magnets on the base circle gave noticeably stronger spin in one direction
  • Getting the ninth magnet positioned right for levitation is key to the whole rig working

Short bench session testing a saw-blade windmill levitating on a pole. I explain permanent magnet orientation, try overlapping disc magnets, and spin it by hand while noting how long it coasts. Future plans include 9-inch discs and a 369 layout. Levitation makes everything easier — the right magnet pull can keep it going for ages.

hello everybody sorry about you know some of my uh passionate remarks about certain things but you know I get that way sometimes so here we go let me explain what we're looking at right here I know that the theme that I'm trying to use is less is more and that's true but check this out all these sideways magnets are overlapping which is important uh for disguising but they're all face down so there's two poles weekly uh protruding from the edge of this disc which is okay it's kind of what I want but you know if we wanted to go all on face North or South we'd have to turn them all up like this turn them up like that have one of the faces of a magnet facing out set it down all right now that I've explained that 10 000 ways um this is my next attempt at trying to simulate the kind of a pulse um circuit with permanent magnets so using the number nine and what I already have I I think we can either go eight magnets make sections of eight so north south north south and now then we can make nine uh sections or we can do eight sections with nine magnets because that's 72 and 72 is five degrees of a circle filled out there are 72 lines right there protruding from the center lucky for me I get to drum two at a time so that's 36 lines and that you know it's pretty cool we'll see if that one can float I did a north south north south and it was a total bomb total failure I don't even know what it's going to be good probably it's good not good for anything right now but I'm gonna keep it around in case and I'm getting some nine inch discs that are coming in a couple weeks and I'm going to make a 369 layout I got three inchers coming nine inches coming and a half and six inches here yeah that's going to be cool all right so let's see how this thing's gonna you know just I'm just gonna throw it on the wheel here foreign that was very weak spin I'm always getting excited thinking I'm seeing is it moving faster but no it never really is it's just it's either maintaining or losing at a very slow rate due to the fact that it's levitating and it's balanced because it's on a pole and if the pull provides balance I'm all for it right now I have thought about getting rid of the pole though what it would take now see I think this would make more sense if those poles could uh push because it's moving for a while it hasn't stopped yet I mean it's not really it's negligible at this point but if you count until dead stop man it's pretty pretty long I can say if you were just spin it and you were rolling it and see if you roll it see now I'm going to put three of these donut magnets on where the discs are on the ground they're in circles now I'm going to spin it the other way that one's a little stronger that's because I'm so used to spinning it that way I think they're all going to have to be facing inward I haven't decided which side of the magnet is north and west side of the magnet is south I mean I have a compass that's over there somewhere Runway that looks and I don't know what the polls are doing anything but that looks pretty uh stable at that rate and this is Megan on magnet 898 so there's a eight inch disc underneath there holding this one up with all this different blades and stuff on it no see if I take all these off which I'm not going to do right now um still have quite a bit of an experimentation to do and you need to do the big magnets on the circles I want to do that just just just to show that it's not it's not helping I wish I had like one more of those size right there that might actually be good because it's levitating it's going to require very little Force to actually get it to move and you can oh put over a nail and you can put it up there facing the wrong way you're gonna suck all your magnets off like what all right so yeah let me start by putting one of these on you see that you see it raise up a little bit and we want to like it that way a little bit oh wow it's moving all right we'll leave it like that like that right there wow that was that was pretty intense man did you see it move I mean no I'm really not that excited I've done this before so but not with those uh blades on there so yeah that looks right and then the last one should level it out and then it should move at least a little bit and then we can spin it and then I'm going to take a break uh re-situate myself maybe paint a picture or something maybe some of that graphite lubricant over there will help not that it isn't spinning good it's spinning great I mean it can spin fast too I mean if you can't go bearing fast I granted like it's not stable enough to do that but stable enough to do this you get the right size stuff the right size bearings right size hole that's the thing they can do because I don't have tools don't have anywhere to use tools yeah it's just not a thing right now let me move that one over a little bit because the other ones are kind of over a little bit so this one should be over a little bit spin it that way this time you might mess around with the vacuum container later I think that this 9 8 thing over here is going to be pretty cool because I think the sections will be close enough and large enough together to balance and give it some levitation and I just think it'll work as long as that ninth one is levitation it'll work [Music] it's like a Price is Right spin you know it's like that real slow methodical I'm just gonna I'm only gonna make it go around one time spin you know what I mean and it ends up going around like 15 times and if you've seen the show right that wheel is nasty all right thank you
